Sleep is considered to be one of the foremost energy boosters in life. The amount of sleep obtained daily isn’t as important as its quality. A quality sleep benefits overall well-being and sleep is a much-needed component to an active lifestyle. It not only takes custody of physical health but also is essential to keep mind and thoughts healthy. It energizes the body and prepares it for the healthy start of the next day.
Dine carefully during the night
Don’t binge in too late during the night hours, and don’t go to sleep on a full or an empty stomach. It is best to avoid heavy foods, as they take a lot of time to digest and can interfere with sleep. Avoid drinking alcohol, caffeine, and nicotine late in the evening. Nutrients such as zinc and magnesium help can help promote better sleep. Zinc converts the tryptophan chemical present in the brain into serotonin, which induces sleep. Magnesium decreases the stress hormone cortisol can prevent stress and tension that interferes with sleep.
Keep stress and worries away from the bedroom. Try to relax and get rid of all the tension that’s built up in the mind and body. Soothing music, nature walks, reading books and deep meditations can relieve the mind and body of stress. Quit working at least 30-45 minutes before going to bed. The mind needs a little time to unwind and enter the valley of a sound sleep. Devices like televisions, mobiles, computers, tablets, and smartphones are distracting. They emit blue light and the brain confuses it with daytime and thereby doesn’t easily enter the sleep mode.
Follow a strict bedtime routine
Our body has an inbuilt schedule known as circadian rhythm. The circadian rhythm is important in determining sleeping patterns such as when we sleep and when we wake, every 24 hours. Modern lives and busy working schedules often prevent us from following that inbuilt rhythmic pattern. We fall asleep late beyond nightfall. In the morning, we don’t wake up easily with alarm calls regardless of how much rest we have taken. Prepare a schedule and stick to it. Go to bed and wake up every day as per the prepared schedule. Create a dark, cool, and quiet environment for sleeping just before going to bed. The sleeping bed should be comfortable enough to provide good and sound sleep.
Energize throughout the day
Sleep itself is an energizer, but we need to energize the mind and body throughout the day. Eat healthy balanced nutritious food. Exercise has proved to be beneficial to get a good, uninterrupted sleep. Go for a light stroll after dinner time. Make sure to energize mind and body by getting plenty of fresh air and sunshine every day. Spend some “me time” doing all those activities that provide enough enjoyment and relief from the everyday difficulties.
Quality sleep is essential to improve physical and mental well-being. Good and sound sleep energizes the body and makes it feel refreshed and renewed. Mind and body both cannot thrive in life in absence of quality sleep. Remember, it is not the number of hours that are spent sleeping that matters. It’s the quality of sleep that’s important.
